Now that summer has arrived and we’re finally seeing some sun in Binghamton, it’s the perfect time to schedule an outdoor family photoshoot. With flowers in full bloom and lush green trees everywhere, our city offers so many beautiful locations that make stunning backdrops for your family portraits. Here are some of my favorite spots for family photos in and around Binghamton.

Recreation Park

Recreation Park (or “Rec Park” as locals call it) is a classic Binghamton favorite. There are plenty of spots throughout the park that work wonderfully for family photos.

The historic carousel (free to ride) is a fun way to capture candid moments, especially with little ones.

The park’s walking trail, shaded by mature trees and dotted with picnic tables, offers a relaxed, natural setting.

The large white gazebo/pavilion makes a charming backdrop for group shots.

And if your kids need a break, the playground provides a chance to snap some playful, in-the-moment photos.

Cutler Botanic Garden

Looking for colorful florals and lots of greenery? The Cutler Botanic Garden is a hidden gem just a short drive from downtown Binghamton. With winding paths, beautiful flower beds, mature trees, benches, and a gazebo, this garden provides countless picture-perfect spots. It’s ideal if you want a more vibrant, garden-inspired session.

Downtown Binghamton

If you’d like an urban feel for your family photos, downtown Binghamton has so much character.

The historic architecture, brick buildings, and pretty storefronts make wonderful backdrops.

A favorite hidden spot is the open area next to the one-way section on Washington Street, perfect for family pictures with a rustic brick backdrop - away from traffic, making it safer for kids.

The courthouse steps and nearby green spaces also create a beautiful setting for walking shots.

After your session, consider grabbing dinner at one of my favorite local spots like Downtown by Chef Jay Pisculli, Dry, Lost Dog Café, Remlik’s, or Station 45 to make it a fun family outing.

Confluence Park & the River Walk

Tucked near the walking bridge, Confluence Park is a small, often overlooked area where the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers meet. It’s lovely for photos with the river and city skyline in the background. From here, you can also follow the River Walk trail for more relaxed, natural shots along the water.

The Walking Bridge

Right downtown, the walking bridge is another iconic Binghamton landmark. In summer, with the trees full and the river below, it makes a simple but striking backdrop for family portraits.

BU Nature Preserve

If you’d like to combine your family session with a little outdoor adventure, the Binghamton University Nature Preserve is perfect. It feels like an escape from the city, with wooded trails, a scenic bridge over a pond, and plenty of peaceful, natural surroundings to explore and photograph.

Aqua-Terra Wilderness Area

Just a short drive from downtown Binghamton, Aqua-Terra is a quiet spot that often isn’t crowded. With its large pond, wooded trails, and secluded feel, it’s a beautiful place for more intimate family photos.
