Crisp air, golden leaves, and cozy sweaters, there's nothing quite like autumn for family portraits. Fall is one of the most popular times of year for photoshoots, and for good reason. The warm colors, layered clothing, and soft natural light come together to create magic in every frame. Whether you're booking your first family session or you're a returning client, here are my top tips for planning and styling a stunning fall family shoot.
1. Choose the Right Time (and Book Early!)
Fall sessions fill up fast, especially during peak foliage weeks. I recommend booking 1-2 months in advance to secure your ideal date. The best time for outdoor lighting is typically the golden hour, about an hour before sunset. This soft, diffused light flatters every skin tone and enhances the rich tones of autumn leaves.
2. Location, Location, Location
Upstate New York is full of picturesque spots for fall photos. Think colorful tree-lined paths, open fields, and rustic backdrops. Some of my favorite local places include:
- Otsiningo Park for its tree variety and wide trails
- Aqua Terra Park for scenic backdrops and lots of trees
- Your own backyard or family property for personal meaning
Choosing a location with sentimental value can add a meaningful layer to your photos.
3. What to Wear: Coordinated, Not Matching
One of the most common questions I get is: what should we wear? Here’s a quick guide:
Color Palette: Embrace warm, earthy tones like mustard, burnt orange, olive green, burgundy, and cream. Avoid bright neons or logos.
Textures & Layers: Think knits, corduroy, denim, and scarves. Layers add visual interest and comfort in cooler temps.
Mix it Up: Combine solids and subtle patterns. Mom in a flowy patterned dress, dad in a solid sweater and chinos, kids in coordinating tones works great.
Don’t forget to bring extra layers, especially for little ones. A cute blanket or wrap can also double as a prop!
4. Prep Your Kids (and Yourself!)
Let the kids know this is going to be a fun experience. Keep snacks and wipes handy, and bring a favorite toy or comfort item. I work with your family's natural energy and guide you into authentic connection, rather than stiff posing. Relaxed, joyful moments are what we aim for.
5. Think Beyond the Frame
Fall photos are perfect for holiday cards, gifts, and wall art. If you know how you want to use your images (e.g., large canvas for the living room or prints for relatives), tell your photographer ahead of time. I always shoot with those final uses in mind.
Fall is a season of change, beauty, and closeness and it’s the perfect time to capture your family's unique story. If you're thinking about booking a session, reach out soon! I'd love to help you plan a cozy, joy-filled fall shoot you’ll treasure forever.
