HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET FAMILY PHOTOS TAKEN?
Family photos are more than pictures, they’re memories you’ll cherish forever.
Every time my daughter wanders around our house, pointing at different photos on the walls, naming each family member and lighting up when she sees herself, I’m reminded how important it is to keep documenting these moments.
But with so many opportunities for photos throughout the year, many parents wonder:
“How often should we actually schedule a professional family photoshoot?”
Let me walk you through it.
The short answer: Once a year is perfect.
As a general rule, plan on family photos once a year. Kids grow and change so quickly. Scheduling an annual session ensures you’ll always have beautiful, professional images to mark each new chapter.
Of course, you’ll still snap plenty of candid shots on your phone at birthdays and holidays. But setting aside time for a dedicated family session means:
You get to choose the outfits and location.
The whole family (including mom!) is in the frame.
You end up with keepsake-quality images for your walls, albums, and gifts.
If your kids are younger, you might even consider more frequent sessions, since they seem to change overnight! But if once a year is all you can do, that’s the sweet spot.
What factors might change how often you book?
The ages of your kids
- Babies & toddlers: Every 6–12 months is ideal. They grow and change so fast!
- School-age kids: Yearly is a wonderful rhythm.
- Teens: Once a year or every couple of years, depending on your family’s preference.
Major life changes
Some seasons call for extra photos—like welcoming a new baby, celebrating a milestone anniversary, or marking a graduation. Those are perfect reasons to plan a special session.
Family traditions & the seasons
Here in the Southern Tier, fall is a favorite for family photos. The colorful foliage makes a stunning backdrop. But don’t overlook summer—those vibrant green fields are a gorgeous contrast to our long gray winters.
If you’d love more than one session a year, holiday photos are a fun second option. They’re often shorter, playful sessions. It’s also a chance to coordinate cozy seasonal outfits (or even dress up for something formal).
The benefits of regular family photos
- Build a beautiful timeline. You’ll have a visual story of your family as they grow.
- Make it less stressful. Kids get used to photos when it becomes a routine.
- Create keepsakes. More opportunities for holiday cards, gifts, and framed prints.
- Get parents in the pictures. It’s so easy for us to always be the ones taking the photos—these sessions make sure you’re in them too.
What if you can’t book photos every year?
If a yearly session isn’t in the budget (or simply feels overwhelming), that’s okay. Even every couple of years is meaningful.
Also look for mini sessions, many photographers (like me!) offer these at a lower cost and shorter time frame. They’re perfect for quick updates without the time or investment of a full session.
And remember, if nothing else, set up your phone on a tripod or lean it against a wall and use the timer. You’ll be so glad to have even a simple family photo to remember the year by.
Tips to make regular family photos easier
As a mom, I know family photos can feel stressful, choosing outfits, hoping the kids cooperate, worrying about weather or naps. A few things that can help:
- Book at the same time each year. For example, every fall. It becomes part of your family routine and is easier to plan for.
- Schedule early. I’ll be opening my 2026 calendar at the end of this year so families can get it on their books well in advance.
- Keep outfits & expectations simple. Neutrals look timeless and keep the focus on your family. And if your little ones don’t follow the plan perfectly? That’s okay. You’ll still capture sweet candids that reflect your real life right now.

FAQs
How often should we do photos if we have a newborn?
For babies under one, I typically recommend milestone sessions at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, or at least newborn and first birthday sessions. Those first years fly by.
Is it worth hiring a photographer if I already take lots of photos on my phone?
Definitely. Phone snapshots are wonderful for everyday memories, but professional photos ensure everyone is in the frame and give you high-quality images to print large for your walls.
Can we combine birthday photos with family photos?
Absolutely. Many families do! It’s a great way to celebrate your child and update family portraits all at once.
