Your Most Frequently Asked Questions

Curious about when to schedule maternity photos, how old your newborn should be for portraits, or what to wear for family pictures? I’ve answered all your top questions to help you feel fully prepared for your next session.

If you’re considering booking a maternity, newborn, or family session, you likely have a few questions about when to schedule, what to wear, and how the process works. As a Binghamton-based photographer specializing in capturing these meaningful milestones, my goal is to ensure your experience feels seamless and enjoyable from start to finish. Below, I’ve answered some of the most common questions I receive to help you feel confident and excited as you plan your session.

When should I book my maternity session?

I typically recommend scheduling your maternity photos between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. Around this time, your baby bump is beautifully visible, but you’re still generally comfortable moving around, which allows us to create natural, relaxed images.

Every pregnancy is different, so we’ll plan according to how you’re feeling. If you find yourself outside of this window, don’t worry - there’s truly no wrong time to celebrate and document this incredible season of life.

How old should my baby be for newborn photos?

Ideally, newborn sessions take place within the first two weeks after birth. During this time, babies are usually sleepier and more naturally curl into those precious, womb-like poses. It’s also a wonderful window to capture their tiny details - delicate eyelashes, wrinkled fingers, and peaceful expressions.

That said, it’s never too late to photograph your baby. Older newborns and infants bring different but equally meaningful moments to your session, such as beautiful eye contact and emerging personalities. Whether your baby is a few days or a few months old, we’ll create timeless images you’ll treasure.

What should we wear for our session?

Choosing what to wear is often one of the biggest concerns for families, and understandably so - your clothing plays a key role in the overall look and feel of your images. I recommend soft, neutral colors and subtle patterns that complement each other without being overly matched. Think light creams, soft blues, muted greens, or warm earth tones.

Avoid clothing with heavy logos, busy graphics, or bright neon colors, as these can distract from the natural connection between you and your loved ones. I’m always happy to offer personalized styling guidance and even review outfit options ahead of time to ensure you feel confident and comfortable.

Where will our session take place?

The location we choose will be tailored to reflect your family and the story you want to tell. Sessions can take place:

Outdoors, in one of our beautiful local parks around Binghamton, Vestal, Endwell, or the greater Southern Tier area, where natural light and open spaces create a timeless backdrop.

In your home, which is especially lovely for newborn sessions or families who wish to capture moments in their own meaningful space.

In a natural light studio, which offers a clean, elegant setting and is ideal if you prefer a controlled environment regardless of the weather.

During our planning process, we’ll discuss your vision, the season, and any special considerations to determine the perfect location for your session.
