As a mom (and family photographer!), I completely understand how unpredictable little ones can be. Here are some of my favorite tips to help your family photoshoot go smoothly and keep everyone happy - especially the kids.
Bring snacks (they’re a lifesaver!)
I know firsthand how important snack time can be - as a mom of a toddler myself, I never leave home without something to nibble on. Having snacks on hand can truly make or break your session. A quick snack break gives kids a chance to recharge and can bring out fresh smiles afterward.
It’s also a perfect opportunity for me to capture a few solo shots of mom and dad, or individual portraits of siblings while the littlest ones regroup.
Pack a favorite toy or comfort item
If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, toy, or even a little blanket that makes them feel secure, bring it along! It might be the magic key to unlocking those natural, joyful expressions. I want to capture your family’s happiest moments, so anything that helps is always welcome.
Schedule around their best time of day
Try to plan your session for a time when your kids are typically well-rested and fed. Avoid scheduling right before naptime or lunch, when meltdowns are more likely. For many families, mornings work beautifully for little ones - they’re often at their happiest after a good night’s sleep.
Get outfits ready ahead of time
Lay out everyone’s clothing the day before. This helps avoid the morning scramble of hunting for that missing shoe or sweater and saves you stress on the day of your photoshoot. Being organized ahead of time means you can leave the house calm and on schedule.
Build in a little buffer time
Give yourself an extra 15-20 minutes before the session starts. That way, if someone needs a last-minute bathroom stop or there’s an unexpected hiccup on the drive over, you won’t feel rushed. Arriving with time to spare helps everyone stay relaxed.
Remember: it’s okay if things don’t go perfectly
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, it just isn’t your little one’s day - and that’s completely okay. If we need to, we can always reschedule. I’ve been there, and I understand these moments happen. My goal is for your session to be a fun, memorable experience for your family, and we’ll work together to make that happen.
