Earlier this summer, I had the joy of photographing baby Francesca during an in-home newborn session for one of my close friend’s younger sisters. I always love getting the chance to document these early days, especially when I already know and love the family.
When we started planning the session, I suggested we do it in their home. Newborn photography at home can be so much easier for new parents. There’s no need to pack up the baby, navigate nap and feeding schedules around a car ride, or worry about forgetting anything. You’re in your own space, surrounded by the things that make you feel comfortable, and that always comes through in the photos.
We began the session with some soft, detailed shots of baby Francesca. I brought along a simple wrap so we could gently highlight her delicate features, tiny fingers, curled toes, and her beautiful black hair. I don’t pose babies in tight swaddles or put them in unnatural positions. My style is baby-led and relaxed. We take breaks when needed, for feeding, diaper changes, or just to snuggle, and I always follow their rhythm.
Francesca was an absolute dream. She gave us little smiles throughout the shoot and seemed so calm and curious. Her sweet personality was already shining through, even at just a few days old.
Partway through the session, we brought in her older brother, Rudy. He was so excited to be included and be next to his baby sister. I always encourage families to include siblings and even pets in newborn photos. Sure, we might not get a perfectly posed shot, but the real moments, the honest ones, are always more meaningful anyway.
Initially, Renee - Francesca’s mom - told me she only wanted pictures of the baby, and that her husband wouldn’t be available to join us. I completely respect that, and I never pressure anyone to be in photos. But I gently suggested she do her hair and wear something she’d feel comfortable being photographed in, just in case. Towards the end of the session, I was able to capture a few quiet moments with her and Francesca, nothing too posed, just natural, loving connection. Some were as simple as her hands cradling her baby or her silhouette in the background. And honestly, those might be my favorite frames from the day.
These early days at home with a new baby are filled with so many quiet, beautiful moments and they go by so quickly. I’m so grateful I got to be there to document this season for Renee and her growing family. I hope these photos bring them back to those first sweet days every time they look at them.
